Greggs Drive-To Pod, Flamstead

A modular Greggs pod added to the edge of an existing EG On The Move petrol filling station at Flamstead. The unit is built off-site and craned into position, giving the forecourt a second food offer without closing the site or rebuilding the shop.

Modular construction is the decision the scheme rests on. Building the pod in a factory keeps time on site to a minimum, so fuel sales and the existing shop keep trading while the work happens around them. It also gives EG a repeatable unit that can be planned, priced and installed the same way on other sites across the estate.

On a working forecourt, the pod has to fit around everything that’s already there. That meant finding space on the edge of the site that keeps clear of tanker routes, fuel islands and fill points, while still putting the unit where drivers can see it from the road and reach it easily on foot from the parking bays.

The design then works through the practical detail that decides whether a pod trades well: customer approach and parking, bin and delivery access, drainage and service connections, and a frontage that meets Greggs’ brand standards without fighting the EG forecourt. The result is a compact, quick-to-build unit that adds a new reason to stop at the site, with the planning case made around a small, low-impact addition to an established roadside use.
